The Klang River has shaped a rich and diverse cultural landscape. Beyond the historic Old Town on the left bank, there are also vibrant communities along the right bank, including the former Chai Tiel timber port, once home to a remarkable concentration of temples, as well as the bustling markets surrounding the Klang Riverside Mosque. In this post, we’ll take you on a journey to explore the unique riverside culture and charm of Klang.

Along the riverside of Klang’s North District was once a thriving timber port, where more than 300 families of Chinese immigrants from Kinmen settled after travelling south, and 18 business owners jointly ran the timber industry. With more than 20 temples concentrated in the area, its cultural and historical richness is truly remarkable.

After years of change, a new café called Hemu has emerged, surrounded by these historic temples. It serves Western-style dishes, baked goods, and coffee, with its special North African Shakshuka eggs bringing a fresh and modern touch to this old timber port!

This mosque along the Klang River is open to visitors for free and even provides red robes for visitors to wear while exploring the mosque. From the mosque, you can enjoy views of the riverside and experience the lively atmosphere of the Saturday Malay market. Nearby, Pasar Jawa offers a variety of traditional Malay snacks and local products, along with its famous cendol. This is the unique charm of the Malay community along the Klang River.

Along the riverside, you’ll also find the long-established Restoran Peng Heong Hakka Paikut. It was once a small stall next to the old bus station, holding cherished childhood memories for generations of Klang residents who used to take the bus there. Later, it moved to a larger shop lot by the river, where it continues to attract food lovers. Today, it has become one of the must visit food spots in Klang!

Walking further along the riverside, you’ll come across one of Klang’s iconic landmarks and a giant coffee cup sculpture. Behind the coffee cup is the well known Sin Lok Coffee ShopShin Lok Kopitiam, famous for its crispy yam puffs and handmade buns. These local favourites are also popular souvenirs for visitors to take home!

When it comes to Klang souvenirs, Bee’s Bakery is definitely one that cannot be missed. It is also part of the childhood memories of many old Klang residents and once had branches scattered across Klang.Today, its flagship store is located in Klang’s North District. Besides a wide selection of traditional Chinese pastries and wedding biscuits, it also offers new creations such as its Spicy Dried Shrimp and Mung Bean Paste Biscuit!

When it comes to Klang’s long established food spots, Kedai Kopi Cheong Foh is one that simply cannot be left out. It was once mentioned alongside the old Chong Kok Kopitiam in the town centre, with the saying: “South Chong Kok, North Cheong Foh.”

What makes it even more interesting is that Cheong Foh has now extended its legacy into a modern café, C u Latte. Besides keeping the tradition of classic Kopi O alive, the café has also created the Klang Latte, a unique blend of Nanyang style coffee and Italian espresso. Definitely worth a try!

Among all the long established eateries, you’ll also find a unique music and arts tea house. Besides serving food and drinks, it also features live Chinese instrumental music performances at selected times. Don’t miss their popular Tiger Skin Egg Tarts, which are especially perfect for enjoying as an afternoon tea treat after a City Walk!

Perhaps many people don’t know that Fried tapioca noodles ( Zi Hun Gen ) actually originated and was popularised in Klang. Among the many places serving this local delicacy, Noble House Seafood in Klang’s North District is a must try for many visitors.

If you’re planning to visit on the weekend, it’s recommended to make a reservation in advance to avoid missing out!

When it comes to must try, queue worthy food in Klang, Kai Kee definitely deserves a spot on the list! Its signature Hokkien noodles topped with crispy pork lard are packed with rich wok hei, while the lala soup is another must order favourite.

If you’re planning to visit, it’s best to go early. Although the restaurant stays open until midnight, the later it gets, the livelier and more crowded it becomes, with countless food lovers coming by for a taste!

What’s there to eat in Klang late at night? This Hainanese curry rice spot only opens at 11 p.m., serving a local specialty that combines fragrant Nanyang-style curry with braised dishes. It’s an absolutely irresistible late night comfort food that’s perfect for satisfying those midnight cravings!
